Police officer in custody for allegedly shooting 25-year-old man over fare dispute at Koans estate
A police officer, Smith Gyekyi, has been detained after surrendering to the Amasaman Police Station.
This follows the shooting of 25-year-old Stanley Ahadzi at Koans Estate in Accra.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 18 August 2024.
The altercation began around 3:00 am when the Gyekyi, an officer with the International Relations Directorate (IRD), was working as a commercial driver, operating a Matiz vehicle with registration number GW 6459-21.
He had picked up a passenger, Esther Owusua, from Ablekuma Joma, who was headed to the Koans Estate area.
Upon reaching the estate, Ms. Owusua, uncertain of the exact location, called Mr. Ahadzi for assistance.
When Mr. Ahadzi arrived at the estate gate, a dispute reportedly arose over the fare charged by the police officer.
The argument escalated rapidly, culminating in the police officer allegedly drawing his service pistol and firing multiple shots at Mr. Ahadzi.
Crime scene investigators responded to a distress call and found Mr. Ahadzi lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds.
His body was transported to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, pending an autopsy.
The police officer has since been detained, and his firearm has been confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
In the aftermath of the incident, Inspector General of Police (IGP0, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, visited the grieving family on Sunday, 18 August 2024, assuring them that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that justice will be served in this tragic case.
