Anti-galamsey taskforce raids Ankobra river: Equipment destroyed and confiscated

The Western Regional Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities with a major operation along the Ankobra River, resulting in the destruction and confiscation of several pieces of equipment.
In the raid, the task force destroyed an undisclosed number of chanfang machines and set ablaze 87 makeshift bunkhouses used by illegal miners.
Additionally, six water pumps, one generator, six excavators, and an outboard motor were seized during the operation.
The raid forms part of ongoing efforts by the government to protect Ghana’s river bodies from the destructive effects of illegal mining, popularly known as "galamsey."
Officials from the task force say the operation was carefully planned following surveillance reports on intensified illegal mining activity along the Ankobra River.
They warned that similar operations would be sustained across the region to clamp down on environmental degradation and restore water bodies to their natural state.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising the taskforce’s intervention while others called for alternative livelihood support for youth engaged in illegal mining.
The Western Regional Security Council has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of Ghana’s natural resources and urged the public to support the anti-galamsey fight.
