Ashanti Regional Minister reveals impact of Kumasi Blue Light Market fire; assures support for affected traders

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that the recent fire outbreak at the Kumasi Blue Light Market has affected approximately 2,900 individuals. The incident, which occurred in the Kumasi Metropolis, has left around 1,500 traders without any means of livelihood, while about 1,300 others can still support themselves.
Dr. Amoakohene cited an assessment conducted by the Ghana National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), which revealed the devastating impact on the affected traders. In response, the Interior Minister has led NADMO to provide assistance to those without any source of income.
Addressing concerns raised during a protest, the Minister clarified that most of the demonstrators were not among the affected traders. He reiterated the government's commitment to helping the affected individuals return to their businesses, with additional support coming from private donors.
To address the emotional toll of the incident, the government is offering psychological support to traders, particularly those who collapsed upon hearing the news of the fire.
Furthermore, the Minister urged traders who have resumed trading in the damaged buildings to cease immediately, as it poses significant safety risks. He has instructed the police to intervene to ensure compliance with this directive.
