GA/R: Tema Chief Fisherman decries political interference in premix fuel distribution

The Chief Fisherman of the Tema Fishing Harbour, Nii Odametey II, has raised concerns over increasing political interference in the distribution of premix fuel, warning that the situation is crippling the local fishing industry.
Speaking to journalist Rebecca Lartey of Accra 100.5 FM, he revealed that some political party loyalists are diverting the subsidized fuel to individuals who are not fishermen, creating an artificial shortage.
As a result, many canoe owners are forced to buy more expensive vehicular fuel from regular fuel stations, significantly increasing their operational costs.
Nii Odametey II lamented that the rising cost of fuel has forced many fisherfolk to abandon their canoes, as they can no longer afford to operate them.
He has, therefore, appealed to the sector minister to take urgent action to address the issue, in line with discussions held during her recent visit to the harbour.
Some fish traders who depend on the fishing industry for their livelihoods have also expressed frustration, noting that the fuel shortage is negatively impacting their businesses.
