Gov't moves to settle GH¢270m debt in Ghana Armed Forces’ food supply crisis

The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has held a crucial meeting to address the food supply challenges facing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The discussion focused on ensuring a sustainable food supply system for the military while tackling outstanding debts owed to suppliers.
It was revealed during the meeting that the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration failed to prioritize food provision for the armed forces, leading to a significant debt burden.
Reports indicate that between August 2023 and December 2024, the government accrued an outstanding debt of approximately GH¢270 million to food suppliers.
Dr Boamah made this revelation in a statement on his Facebook wall on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has pledged to settle current food supply bills while working toward clearing the GH¢270 million arrears left by the former administration.
“We are committed to providing both short-term and medium-term solutions to this avoidable food supply crisis,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated.
“The well-being of our soldiers cannot be compromised, and we will begin implementing solutions starting next week.”
The government’s immediate priority is to ensure a steady food supply for the armed forces while formulating a long-term strategy to prevent future shortages.
