President Mahama on the heels of Chief Justice to respond to removal petitions in 10 days

President John Mahama has officially directed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to submit a preliminary response within 10 days to three petitions calling for her removal from office.
The petitions, submitted by three individuals on February 14 and March 17, 2025, alleged misconduct and abuse of power.
The directive was outlined in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
It follows a constitutional procedure that began when the President initially forwarded the petitions to Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State, for consultation, as mandated by Article 146(6) of the Constitution. The Council of State gave its consent on March 27, 2025, after which the petitions were sent to the Chief Justice for her comments.
However, President Mahama expressed concern over a leaked letter from Chief Justice Torkonoo, dated March 27, 2025, which circulated on social media before he had the opportunity to review it.
The President emphasized the need for due process and professionalism in handling such sensitive matters.
The Chief Justice has been given 10 days to respond, after which the President will make a determination on the next steps in the matter
