V/R: Strange skin disease outbreak hits Mepe

Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, the sub-divisional chief of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume in the Volta Region, has made an urgent appeal to the government for assistance following the outbreak of a mysterious skin disease in the Avetakpo farming community.
The outbreak, which has already affected over 46 individuals, is causing severe discomfort among residents, particularly children and adults.
Symptoms include intense bodily pain and sleep deprivation, prompting growing concern among locals and traditional authorities.
In an appeal to the government, Togbe Amedor III explained that many affected residents are unable to access medical treatment due to financial hardship.
According to the Ho East District Health Directorate, an estimated GH₵ 6,642.50 is needed to treat those currently affected — an amount the community cannot afford.
“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid because we are not able to raise the total of GH₵ 6,642.50,” the chief said, stressing the urgent need for medical intervention.
Compounding the crisis is a lack of clear diagnosis.
Health officials have not yet disclosed the name or cause of the disease, leaving residents in uncertainty as it continues to spread to neighbouring communities.
Togbe Amedor III also highlighted the community’s lack of access to clean drinking water as a possible contributor to the outbreak.
He noted that residents share water sources with cattle, increasing the risk of contamination and further endangering public health.
The chief is calling on the government and health authorities to swiftly provide funding for treatment, investigate the root cause of the disease, and implement preventive measures to stop its spread.
“This situation is dire. We urgently need support — not only financial aid for treatment but also long-term solutions like access to clean water and better healthcare services,” he added.
