Deputy A-G condemns MP’s alleged abuse of parliamentary privilege

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Srem Sai has criticized Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin for allegedly abusing parliamentary privilege by making false and malicious statements under the protection of the Constitution.
In a statement, Justice Srem Sai noted that while the Constitution grants MPs immunity from defamation suits to promote good-faith parliamentary debate, this protection does not extend to falsehoods intended to create public disaffection.
"Sadly, an MP has chosen to abuse this protection by using the premises of Parliament to peddle malicious falsehoods, which has resulted in creating public disaffection and opprobrium for persons.
That, clearly, defeats the purpose of constitutional protection," he stated.
His comments come in the wake of allegations surrounding the recent search of Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence.
The Deputy AG clarified that Dr. Addison had legal representation throughout the process and that the search was conducted in accordance with court authorization.
Justice Srem Sai emphasized the need to address such abuses of parliamentary privilege to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
