Gov't refutes reports on alleged introduction of sports levy — Says Cabinet has not approved any such measure

The Minister for Government Communications, Mr. Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has dismissed as false and misleading media reports claiming that the Cabinet of President John Dramani Mahama has approved a “Sports Levy” as the primary funding source for the proposed Sports Development Fund.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye clarified that no such levy has been proposed or approved by Cabinet, contrary to reports published by myjoyonline.com quoting Mr. Evans Yeboah, Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, as the source of the information.
“For the avoidance of doubt, NO such levy has been proposed, and neither has the same been approved by Cabinet,” the Minister emphasised.
He explained that the Cabinet has indeed approved a proposed Bill for the establishment of a Sports Development Fund, but the funding sources outlined in the official document do not include any form of levy.
According to the Minister, the report suggesting the introduction of a levy to finance sports development is inaccurate and risks misleading the public about government policy.
“The document clearly outlines the legitimate sources of funding for the Sports Development Fund, and the imposition of a levy is not among them,” he added.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye urged the media to verify information from official government sources before publication to avoid spreading misinformation that could undermine public confidence in national policy discussions.
The proposed Sports Development Fund Bill is expected to provide a sustainable framework for financing sports infrastructure, athlete development, and talent promotion in Ghana, drawing on transparent and legally sanctioned sources of revenue.
