IGP monitors Akwatia by-election, assures voters of security

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Tuesday visited the Obenewa Preparatory School polling station in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region to monitor the ongoing by-election.
The IGP interacted with officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) and observed proceedings to ensure that voting was taking place smoothly and in accordance with electoral regulations.
He reassured both electoral officers and voters of the Police Service’s readiness to maintain peace, security, and transparency throughout the exercise.
The by-election, which has attracted national attention, is being held following the passing of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots to elect a new representative in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested race between Ghana’s two dominant political parties.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is being represented by Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fielded Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
Both candidates have mounted vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, supported by senior party executives and national figures who have trooped to the constituency to rally support.
To safeguard the process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across the constituency.
The officers have been tasked with maintaining order before, during, and after voting.
Police have also cautioned against electoral violence, voter intimidation, or any breach of election regulations, warning that offenders will be dealt with firmly.
The Electoral Commission, for its part, has assured stakeholders of a transparent and credible exercise, noting that special arrangements have been made to ensure the timely delivery of election materials, close monitoring of voting, and efficient collation of results.
The Akwatia by-election is widely regarded as a key test of political strength between the NDC and the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
