MP’s distribution of food during special voting ‘shameful’ – Domelevo
Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has condemned the alleged food distribution by the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, during the Special Voting exercise on Monday, 2 December 2024 at the Legon Police Station polling centre.
Speaking on the sidelines of a public forum titled Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance: The Role of Media, Mr. Domelevo described the incident as a serious breach that undermines the integrity of Ghana's electoral process. He called on political parties and election officials to refrain from actions that could be interpreted as attempts to influence voters.
“This is a troubling practice that erodes fairness and transparency in our elections. It’s not only about what happens on election day but the entire electoral process. The shame goes to our police and security officers who accepted these acts. If they can collect food, how can they have the moral authority to arrest anyone caught taking money to vote on Saturday?” Mr. Domelevo remarked.
He also criticised the involvement of security personnel, including prison officers, who were reportedly seen holding food and standing in the queue, labelling it as “shameful” and a poor reflection of those entrusted with maintaining electoral integrity.
“I found it very shameful. I saw prison officers, I saw others, and I asked myself, ‘What is this?’ That action should not be tolerated,” he added, stressing the need for strict adherence to rules that safeguard Ghana’s democratic values.
