NPP disowns comments by Wontumi and Abronye, assures fair internal processes

The national leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has distanced itself from controversial remarks made by two of its regional chairmen, describing their claims as “baseless” and inconsistent with the values of the party.
In a statement issued on September 28, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP urged the public and party members to disregard the pronouncements of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), and Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC).
The two leaders had sparked debate with separate claims.
Abronye, speaking on live television, suggested he could influence the compilation of polling station albums, while Wontumi alleged that the scheduled January 31, 2026, date for the party’s presidential primary was designed to favour a specific aspirant.
The party firmly rejected both claims, stressing its commitment to fairness and transparency in its internal processes.
“No individual, irrespective of rank or position, has a monopoly or unilateral control over the compilation of polling station albums,” the statement clarified.
On Wontumi’s allegation regarding the congress date, the NPP explained that the decision was purely strategic.
“The assertion that the January 31, 2026, primary date was chosen to favour a particular aspirant is unfounded.
The decision to hold an early congress is intended solely to provide the Party with sufficient time and strategic advantage to reorganise, reposition, and recapture power in 2028,” the party said.
The leadership further assured members that transparent procedures would be followed at every stage of the internal electoral process to safeguard credibility and unity within the party.
