PRINPAG swearing-in: Gov't reaffirms commitment to press freedom

The Private Newspaper and Online Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) recently held a swearing-in ceremony for its newly elected national executives.
Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, delivered a speech on behalf of Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister responsible for government communication.
The Minister emphasised the crucial role of press freedom in sustaining and growing democracy.
He acknowledged the media industry's challenges, including the rise of technology and the existential crisis facing the print media.
Despite these challenges, the Minister noted that technology presents new opportunities for the media industry to reset and recover its lost glory.
The Minister cited a keynote speaker who questioned the relevance of journalism in today's society, noting that less than 10% of society regularly consumes serious news.
However, he emphasised that the government is committed to supporting the media industry and ensuring that it continues to play a vital role in Ghana's democracy.
The minister assured the media industry of the government's continuous commitment to press freedom and the media industry.
He emphasised that the government recognises the importance of a free and independent media in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
