Vincent O. Asamoah: Former Dep Sports Min asserts Ghanaian sports need a 'reset'
A former Deputy Sports Minister, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, has argued revitalising Ghanaian sports was just as important as resetting the Ghanaian economy.
His comments, made during a Happy Sports interview, come after Ghana’s abysmal performance at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers last year, and the swearing in of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader John Dramani Mahama as the new president of Ghana.
President Mahama campaigned on the promise of resetting Ghana’s economy to the equitable benefit of all citizens.
“We must not just reset Ghana’s economy but the sports and other sectors as well. Let’s reflect and correct the things we have done wrongly in the past. It will take a while, but the results will manifest,” Mr Oppong Asamoah said, emphasising the need for long-term planning.
“You will agree with me that sports in Ghana is on the decline. There are some countries doing well, and we must look at them and copy what will work for us. We need to go back and find out what went wrong,” he, also, suggested.
Furthermore, Mr Oppong Asamoah indicated he was not considering answering a call to lead the Sports & Recreation Ministry under President Mahama.
“I don’t want to be appointed as the New Minister for Sports and Recreation because of the insults and lambasting I would receive from Ghanaians,” he explained.
