The Bank of Ghana will introduce a new series of cedi banknotes in November with enhanced security and durability features, the central bank said on Thursday, in its first major redesign of the currency in more than two decades.

The Bank of Ghana will launch the new notes, known as the "Heritage Series", on Nov. 3 at the Bank Square in Accra, Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama said.

The new banknotes are designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of currency management, Asiama said.

The central bank said the redesign was necessary as technology and security standards have advanced while the existing core banknote designs have been in circulation for more than 20 years.

The Heritage Series will feature modern designs reflecting Ghana's heritage and national identity, with each denomination drawing on Ghanaian iconographic elements, Asiama said.

The redesign will also provide an opportunity to honour national heroes and highlight Ghanaian culture and history, he said.

The introduction of the new notes will not invalidate the existing currency.

"The new Heritage Series will co-circulate with the existing Ghana Cedi banknotes that are currently in circulation," Asiama said.

The central bank said members of the public would not need to withdraw or exchange existing notes solely because of the new series.

Asiama also urged businesses, traders, banks and the public to handle banknotes properly to extend their lifespan and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.

He called for an end to practices including writing on notes, stapling them, crumpling them and using banknotes for decorative purposes such as money bouquets and spraying.

"Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes," Asiama said.

The new currency series is being introduced as Ghana modernises its financial system and seeks to ensure that the national currency remains secure, durable and suited to changing economic conditions.

The central bank has described the Heritage Series as "the Cedi, our future, secure, designed to last."

The new notes will be launched on Nov. 3, after which they will circulate alongside the existing banknotes.
