The Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Bernard Otabil, has urged journalists to prioritise accuracy and professionalism, warning that misinformation and disinformation pose serious risks to national security and the global economy.

Speaking at a two-day media capacity-building workshop in Koforidua for journalists from the Eastern, Ashanti, Central and Volta regions, Mr Otabil said false information spreads rapidly and often continues to influence public opinion even after corrections are issued.

He noted that the World Economic Forum has consistently identified misinformation and disinformation as major global risks over the next two to five years.

He stressed that economies and financial markets depend on credible information, warning that inaccurate reporting could mislead investors, distort markets and lead to significant financial losses.

He added that misinformation could also fuel social and political tensions and, in extreme cases, threaten national security.

Mr Otabil said media freedom must be exercised responsibly and emphasised that journalists are only as effective as their understanding of the sectors they cover.

He explained that the workshop, held from 17–18 June 2026, was organised to deepen journalists' understanding of economic and monetary issues, including the impact of monetary policy on national development.

He added that while inflation and other economic indicators may seem abstract, the way they are reported can shape public perception and national outcomes.

Mr Otabil further stressed that journalists play a vital role in helping the public understand economic issues and government policies, noting that behind every economic statistic is a human being.
