Gov't invites strategic partners for new national airline
The Ministry of Transport has officially commenced a market-sounding exercise and issued an open invitation to potential strategic partners for the establishment of a new national airline.
In a press release issued on April 28, 2026, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe (MP), outlined the government’s vision for a commercially viable and sustainable carrier based in Accra, designed to serve as a hub for regional and intercontinental travel.
Selection Process and Partner Requirements
The government intends to select a partner through three rounds of interactions. To be eligible, prospective partners must be an operating airline, a subsidiary of an airline, or a consortium authorized by an operating carrier.
Key requirements for applicants include:
- Expertise in airline operations, management, and marketing.
- Proven experience in route planning and network development.
- A history of regulatory compliance.
- Financial strength and a business plan aligned with the government's objectives.
Operational Strategy
The preferred strategic partner is expected to hold a majority equity stake in a joint venture corporate entity. The government has specified that the new airline should be capable of managing three distinct units:
- Full-Service Carrier (FSC): Focused on premium long-haul routes to Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.
- Hybrid/Low-Cost Carrier (LCC): Focused on regional integration and competitive fares.
- Integrated Cargo Unit: To support national trade and logistics.
The partner will be responsible for the acquisition and deployment of a fleet, with initial operations expected to commence no later than the first quarter of 2027.
Submission Guidelines
Interested parties are required to submit their proposals, including a company overview, preliminary expectations of the relationship with the government, and an indicative business plan.
Submissions should be labeled "Request for Inclusion in the Investor Engagement Rounds: Establishment of a National Airline for Ghana" and directed to the Ministry of Transport. The deadline for submissions is May 29, 2026.
This initiative marks the latest step in Ghana's efforts to re-establish a national flag carrier to enhance the country's aviation sector and international connectivity.
