Transport operators slam NRSA over Toyota Voxy ban

A number of recent fatal road accidents have involved the Voxy vehicle, raising great concerns

Commercial transport operators across Ghana have strongly criticised the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) over its decision to ban the use of the Toyota Voxy for commercial transport, describing the move as “lazy and ill-conceived.”

In a press release issued on April 8, the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana argued that the directive fails to address the real causes of road accidents and instead places an unfair burden on drivers and their families.

According to the group, the Toyota Voxy remains a widely used and dependable vehicle within the transport sector, and banning it outright could disrupt livelihoods and reduce income for many operators.

“Rather than engaging in blanket bans, the NRSA should focus on educating drivers on road safety and organising seminars to enhance their skills,” the statement said.

The operators are calling on the authority to reverse its decision and adopt more targeted interventions. They propose increased stakeholder engagement, improved driver training programmes, and a stronger focus on addressing systemic challenges such as poor road infrastructure and high-risk accident zones.

The group further warned that the decision reflects a lack of understanding of the complexities within Ghana’s transport sector and vowed to resist the directive.

“We will not support this shameful idea and will take all necessary steps to protect our members’ interests,” the statement added.

The release was jointly signed by Asonaba Nana Wiredu, National Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana; David Agboado, Public Relations Officer; and Yaw Barimah, National PRO of the True Drivers Union.
