Kofi Mole laments lack of structure and clear identity in Ghana’s music industry
Rapper Kofi Mole has expressed concern about the lack of structure within Ghana’s entertainment industry, despite the country’s strong influence in music, culture, commerce and tourism.
Speaking on Luv FM, the award-winning artiste said the absence of clear systems has made the entertainment business unnecessarily unstable, with music being one of the hardest-hit sectors. He also criticised the lack of unity among musicians and key industry stakeholders, noting that promotions are still driven largely by goodwill rather than dependable structures.
“Ghana music is supposed to be booming more than this, but something is wrong,” he said.
According to Kofi Mole, the sense of an organised industry is missing, leaving artistes to operate largely on their own.
“Everybody is on their own. I don’t even feel an industry vibe,” he said.
“You wake up, make your music, connect with your friends but you don’t feel an industry.”
He further argued that Ghana is facing a music identity crisis, stressing that the country’s global positioning should translate into stronger musical influence.
“We are doing well, but we are supposed to be doing way better,” he noted. “Ghana is the gateway to Africa — our music should reflect that power.”
Comparing Ghana to other music powerhouses, Kofi Mole pointed out that several countries are clearly defined by specific genres.
“Nigeria is known for Afrobeats. South Africa owns Amapiano. Jamaica owns reggae,” he said. “But Ghana? We don’t have that one sound the world knows us for.”
