One-week observation announced for Gospel icon Yaw Sarpong
A one-week observation has been announced in honour of Yaw Sarpong, renowned gospel musician and leader of the Asomafo Band, following his passing.
The celebrated singer and composer Yaw Sarpong passed away on January 20, 2026, in Kumasi at the age of 66, a development confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis.
Yaw Sarpong was widely revered for his immense contribution to Ghana’s gospel music landscape, particularly through the Asomafo Band, whose spiritually uplifting songs have shaped Christian worship across generations.
According to the family, the one-week observation will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2026. The solemn ceremony is scheduled to take place at Asuofua Park in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.
The event is expected to bring together family members, clergy, musicians, admirers and members of the general public to reflect on the life, legacy and enduring impact of the gospel icon.
