Yaw Sarpong’s family withheld news of Maame Tiwaa’s passing to protect his health
The son of the late gospel legend Yaw Sarpong has revealed that the family deliberately kept him unaware of the passing of singer Maame Tiwaa, citing concerns about his health and emotional wellbeing.
Speaking on Okay FM with Nana Romeo on January 22, 2026, he explained that although Maame Tiwaa’s death was widely reported on social media, Yaw Sarpong remained uninformed because he was not active online.
“No one informed him about Maame Tiwaa's death. Everything was going on on social media, but because he wasn't active, he didn't know about it,” he said.
The son added that the decision was made due to the deep and decades-long bond between Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa.
“The reason why we didn't inform him was that my father and Maame Tiwaa knew each other from their young age till they grew old. The kind of relationship and bond they both had was very strong,” he noted.
He further explained that the family feared the news might worsen Yaw Sarpong’s condition.
“We knew the news would break him, and since we wanted him to recover faster, we had to hide the news from him,” he added.
Apart from Yaw Sarpong, Maame Tiwaa, who passed away on December 7, 2025, was the most prominent singer in his Asomafo Band, contributing significantly to his ministry and caring for him during his illness. Yaw Sarpong, however, remained unaware of her passing and died shortly afterward on January 20, 2026.
In 2025, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs). Unable to attend in person, Maame Tiwaa accepted the award on his behalf and also performed a tribute in his honour during the event.
