Twenty-eight Ghanaians, largely made up of young people, have been rescued from a suspected human trafficking operation in Côte d’Ivoire and returned home safely, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

The victims arrived in Ghana on May 10 after a coordinated rescue effort involving Ghanaian security agencies and officials at the Ghana Embassy in Abidjan.

In a statement issued in Accra, the Ministry disclosed that the rescued individuals are currently cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to uncover the trafficking network and prosecute those responsible.

According to the Ministry, the operation was carried out successfully through close collaboration between Ghanaian and Ivorian authorities.

Government also expressed appreciation to the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire for their support, cooperation and intelligence sharing throughout the mission.

The statement added that the Mahama administration remains committed to ensuring that the perpetrators behind the trafficking syndicate are identified and brought to justice.

The Ministry further advised Ghanaians to be cautious of suspicious travel and job opportunities, especially offers made through unregistered recruitment agencies.

It urged the public to confirm the legitimacy of overseas employment and travel arrangements through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment Relations, as well as Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad.

“The welfare of Ghanaians remains a top priority,” the Ministry stated.
