REGSEC begins demolition of illegal structures at Sakumo Ramsar Site
A joint operation by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly is set to commence on Tuesday, May 5, targeting illegal developments within the Golf Course enclave of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
The three-day exercise is aimed at clearing structures erected on waterways to restore proper drainage and minimise the risk of flooding as the rainy season sets in.
Authorities say unauthorised construction in the area has severely blocked key drainage paths, contributing to recurring floods in nearby communities.
They emphasised that the demolition drive is part of ongoing enforcement measures and not a one-off action, noting that previous warnings and interventions have failed to halt encroachment on the protected wetland.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site, recognised internationally for its ecological value, continues to face pressure from unchecked human activity, particularly illegal building.
Officials warn that continued disregard for planning laws poses a threat not only to the environment but also to lives and property.
Security personnel will be deployed to ensure order during the exercise, while affected individuals have been advised to comply with directives to prevent any clashes.
