The First Vice President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, has strongly criticised reports that some ward managers are allegedly demanding money from student nurses before endorsing their clinical logbooks.

Speaking at an event in Pusu-Namongo to mark International Women’s Day, Mr. Akolgo described the alleged practice as unethical and damaging to the integrity of the nursing profession.

He expressed concern that such behaviour undermines professional standards, warning that it tarnishes the image of nursing, especially when carried out by senior practitioners who are expected to mentor students.

Mr. Akolgo, who also serves as an anaesthetist and legal officer with the Ghana Health Service, urged those involved to desist immediately, stressing that exploiting students for personal benefit is unacceptable.

He pointed out that many trainee nurses currently face financial challenges and should be supported rather than burdened further, noting that earlier generations benefited from better support systems during their training.

In addition, he advised nurse managers to avoid intimidating or mistreating junior staff, calling for a more supportive and inclusive working environment that encourages professional development.

Mr. Akolgo emphasised the need for senior healthcare workers to uphold ethical standards and foster trust within the system to ensure the growth of the next generation of nurses and midwives.
