The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining with a major operation along the Birim River at Akurofufu in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region.

The early morning raid, carried out on Wednesday, targeted illegal mining activities that have led to significant pollution and diversion of the Birim River.

According to NAiMOS, upon arrival at the site, the task force encountered a large group of approximately 200 youth actively engaged in illegal mining.

However, the miners fled into nearby bushes on sighting the advancing team, evading arrest.

Despite the mass escape, the task force moved swiftly to dismantle and destroy mining infrastructure at the site.

Over thirty (30) chanfang machines were burnt, alongside fifteen (15) Chanfang platforms and several wooden boards used for gold washing.

Pipe hoses and abandoned clothing believed to belong to the fleeing miners were also destroyed.

The operation forms part of NAiMOS’ ongoing nationwide efforts to combat illegal mining, particularly along major water bodies and forest reserves, where activities continue to pose serious environmental and public health risks.

The Secretariat has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on illegal mining operators and protecting Ghana’s natural resources from further degradation.
