Jinapor: 200 transformers installed as part of nationwide upgrade
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has disclosed that nearly 200 transformers have so far been installed nationwide as part of a larger initiative to replace about 2,500 outdated units.
According to him the new transformers have higher capacity, moving away from the widely used 20 KVA systems to more efficient units of 30 KVA and above to meet growing demand.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, he explained that the programme is aimed at improving voltage quality and strengthening the reliability of electricity supply.
Mr. Jinapor added that the installation of these upgraded transformers is being focused on major primary substations to boost voltage levels in key locations.
He mentioned areas such as Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua as some of the communities already benefiting from the upgrades, noting that the improvements are evident.
The ongoing rollout is expected to reduce the burden on overstretched infrastructure and enhance the overall stability of power distribution across the country.
“Government is addressing this issue head-on by implementing a nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement programme. As an immediate intervention, this month alone, we have installed almost 200 transformers,” he said.
