Dr. Mary Awusi refutes ‘Chooboi Chooboi’ comment, describes viral flyer as doctored
The Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media that she disrespected grassroots members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their role in the party’s 2024 electoral victory.
The controversy follows the circulation of a flyer and an alleged audio recording online quoting Dr. Awusi as saying: “Your expectations of the government are too much. Tone it down, because it wasn’t your ‘chooboi chooboi’ and ‘Eye Zu’ that made us win the election.”
The statement, which was widely shared across social media platforms, sparked criticism among some party supporters who believed the remarks undermined the contributions of NDC constituency executives and grassroots activists.
However, Dr. Awusi has categorically denied making the comment, insisting that the quote is false, misleading, and deliberately fabricated to damage her reputation.
Speaking on The Citizen Show with Nana Otu Darko, she emphasized that she holds deep respect for grassroots members of the party and would never make statements that belittle their efforts.
According to her, the viral content including the alleged audio is doctored material designed to create division within the party and tarnish her image.
Dr. Awusi noted that she considers herself a grassroots member who understands the sacrifices and hard work of party supporters during election periods.
“I am a grassroots person myself, and I fully appreciate the sacrifices made by constituency executives, foot soldiers, and party supporters who worked tirelessly for the party’s victory,” she stated.
She further alleged that some bloggers believed to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may be behind the circulation of the misleading content in an attempt to stir confusion within the NDC.
Dr. Awusi therefore urged the public and party supporters to disregard the flyer and the alleged audio, stressing that they do not represent her views.
She also called on the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible for spreading the alleged misinformation are identified and held accountable.
The Ghana Free Zones Authority CEO reiterated her commitment to working closely with grassroots members and all stakeholders to promote unity within the party and contribute to national development.
