The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to hold a protest today, Wednesday, April 22, in Sunyani, a move likely to intensify political activity in the Bono Region.

The march, titled the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo”—which translates from Akan as “We are not afraid of intimidation” is anticipated to draw a large crowd of party faithful, supporters, and residents from within and beyond the region.

The planned demonstration comes in response to the arrest of the party’s Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, widely known as Baba Amando.

Party representatives say his detention has unsettled members, raising concerns about whether fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and political participation are being fully upheld.

Leaders of the NPP in the region have described the development as worrying and are demanding clearer information from the authorities regarding the circumstances of the arrest.

They emphasize that the protest goes beyond the detention of Baba Amando, framing it as a stand in defense of democratic values and civil liberties.

According to the party, the protest will serve as an avenue to draw attention to what it sees as increasing challenges to constitutional freedoms and the rule of law.

In response, the Ghana Police Service has indicated that sufficient measures have been put in place to maintain peace and order during the event. The police have also appealed to demonstrators to act responsibly and adhere to regulations governing public gatherings.
