'Register your drones before flying' — GCAA warns
A retired pilot and aviation safety inspector at Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Captain Collins Fosu, has urged drone operators in Ghana to strictly comply with registration and licensing regulations before flying their devices.
Speaking on Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM with Chief Jerry Forson on Tuesday, Captain Fosu emphasized that Ghana already has well-established frameworks governing drone usage, rooted in aviation safety planning that dates back decades.
According to him, as far back as 1948, aviation authorities globally had anticipated the emergence of Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones), prompting early preparations and regulatory structures. He noted that Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has since developed clear laws and procedures to ensure safe drone operations in the country.
Captain Fosu explained that anyone bringing a drone into Ghana—especially through airports—will be required to declare it. Customs officials typically direct such individuals to the Civil Aviation Authority to complete the necessary documentation. After paying a fee, operators are issued permits or licenses depending on the intended use.
He stressed that drones used for commercial or business purposes require proper authorization and licensing before operation. However, he expressed concern that many users ignore these requirements.
“Most people don’t obtain the license, but when they are caught, there are penalties,” he warned.
He concluded by reassuring the public that Ghana remains safe in terms of drone operations due to the structures already in place, but compliance by users is critical to maintaining aviation safety.
