Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Affairs Minister

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate relocation of Mr Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian national who was recently targeted in a xenophobic attack by a vigilante group in South Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the decision on Saturday, April 25, stating that the move is part of urgent consular measures designed to ensure the safety of Ghanaian citizens living abroad.

In a statement released via Facebook, the minister noted that he has been in direct contact with Mr Asamoah, who is reported to be safe despite facing "incessant threats."

“The Government of Ghana is relocating Mr Emmanuel Asamoah, the Ghanaian legally living in South Africa, who came under unwarranted xenophobic attack from a fringe vigilante group,” the Minister stated.

Contrary to some initial reports regarding his residency status, Mr Ablakwa clarified that Mr Asamoah was not an illegal immigrant. Investigations conducted by South African authorities verified that he possessed all the necessary documentation required to live and work in the country.

The minister also commended the South African government for its cooperation and "reassuring response" to the incident. He specifically highlighted a press statement issued by South Africa’s Minister for Police, Prof Firoz Cachalia, noting that diplomatic engagements between the two nations have remained constructive.

The Ghanaian government is currently liaising with South African counterparts to monitor the situation and ensure the ongoing protection of all Ghanaians residing in South Africa.
