South African Police Ministry condemns attacks on Ghanaian nationals
The South African Ministry of Police has issued a formal condemnation of recent violence and intimidation targeting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign residents, labeling the acts as a direct violation of the country’s democratic principles.
In a statement released on Facebook on Friday, April 24, 2026, the ministry characterised the surge in xenophobic incidents as unacceptable criminal conduct. Government officials emphasized that these actions stand in opposition to South Africa's constitutional values of dignity, equality, and human rights.
Law Enforcement Directive
The ministry warned that no individual or group has the authority to bypass the legal system to address grievances. To manage the situation, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has received explicit instructions to respond to further incidents with decisive action.
Authorities stated that any individuals found inciting, supporting, or participating in violence will be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted. The Ministry reiterated that South Africa remains a state governed by the rule of law, where vigilante justice is not tolerated.
Community Response and Safety
The government’s intervention follows the circulation of online videos showing the harassment of foreign nationals, which prompted significant concern within the Ghanaian community and among international observers.
The Ministry of Police has called for calm across all affected communities, urging residents to reject efforts to spread division.
Community leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders have been encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to promote dialogue and prevent further escalations of violence.
While community leaders have expressed concern over recurring patterns of hostility toward foreigners, the ministry maintains that security agencies are focused on restoring order and ensuring the safety of all residents within the Republic.
