Energy Minister Visits Technical Team at Akosombo Substation

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has commended engineers and technical teams working on the restoration of power systems following the recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company substation at Akosombo.

The Minister praised the dedication and commitment of personnel from GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority, and other allied institutions who have been working around the clock to stabilise electricity supply after the incident disrupted transmission operations across parts of the country.

Speaking during an inspection of ongoing restoration works, Mr. Jinapor expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and acknowledged the sacrifices being made by the technical teams to restore normal power supply within the shortest possible time.

He noted that despite the extent of damage caused by the fire, engineers have managed to restore some generation units and reroute power through alternative transmission arrangements to minimise the impact on consumers.

The Minister urged the teams to maintain the momentum until full stability is achieved, assuring them of government’s support throughout the recovery process.

The fire incident at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation occurred on Thursday, April 23, 2026, causing significant damage to critical infrastructure, including the control room and parts of the switchgear system. The development affected the evacuation and transmission of electricity nationwide, leading to intermittent power outages in several areas.

In response, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the cause of the fire, while emergency repair works were immediately initiated.

Government has also announced a nationwide audit and overhaul of energy installations to strengthen operational efficiency and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Authorities say engineers continue to work on remaining affected units as efforts intensify to fully restore stable electricity supply across the country.
