NHIA to enroll one million residents in Ashanti Region in free health insurance exercise
The Board of Directors of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced plans to register one million residents in the Ashanti Region at no cost, as part of a special outreach programme scheduled for May 2026.
The initiative, which will be conducted under the theme “The King’s Month,” is being held in honour of the birthday of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Asantehene on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, where the NHIA leadership briefed him on preparations for the exercise.
The delegation was led by the Board Chairman, Lawrence Nii Okantey Adjetey, and the Chief Executive Officer, Victor Asare Bampoe.
They were accompanied by board and management members including Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Francisca Atuluk, Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, and Pious Kwame Nkuah.
According to the Authority, the mass registration exercise forms part of efforts to expand access to the National Health Insurance Scheme and ensure that more residents in the Ashanti Region are enrolled to benefit from healthcare services.
The NHIA noted that the initiative reflects its commitment to improving healthcare coverage while also paying tribute to the Asantehene in recognition of his contribution to development in the region.
Further details on the registration points and modalities are expected to be announced ahead of the commencement of the exercise in May.
