Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has commenced legal action against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over comments he says have damaged his reputation.

Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed the lawsuit when Parliament resumed on Monday, August 24, 2026, amid an escalating public disagreement between the two over the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The Effutu MP has been demanding answers from government and GoldBod over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 in connection with the programme.

Mr Gyamfi, meanwhile, has rejected the Minority Leader’s interpretation of the reported losses, insisting that the financial shortfall cannot be attributed to GoldBod.

The controversy intensified after Mr Gyamfi accused the Minority Leader of being an “extortionist” in response to his criticisms of the gold purchasing arrangement and calls for greater accountability.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, responding to the extortion allegations, told the House that he had taken the matter to court and had also initiated proceedings against media outlets that published or aired the disputed remarks.

“I am ready to submit myself to the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the other agencies for more investigations.”

He said he was confident the court would resolve the matter on the basis of the evidence and the relevant laws.

“There is a limit to political discourse and there are lines that must not be crossed, and once crossed, there must be dealt with,” he emphasised.

He also indicated that he is prepared to defend the statements attributed to him before the court, stressing he has served Parliament and his constituents “as a Minority Leader with integrity, hardworking and determination, working to serve the House and my constituents”.

“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.

He also challenged his accusers to “muster courage to report the issue to the various security agencies for further investigation”.
