Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says he will not be distracted by personal attacks from Gold Board (GOLDBOD) Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi as he continues to push for answers over reported losses associated with Ghana’s gold trade.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, Mr Afenyo-Markin accused Mr Gyamfi of abusing him because he currently has political power.

He said he remained committed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and would continue pursuing what he considers the right course for the party and the country.

“I'm ready to do the heavy lifting for this party NPP. My step father and my mom fought for the party, my daddy suffered for the party and it's my turn. I will fight for the party with a clear mind. I won't shake.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority’s concerns over the reported losses were genuine and that the NPP was presenting the facts as it understood them.

“What we are telling the people of Ghana about these losses is the truth. Nothing more, nothing less.”

He urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to acknowledge what he described as policy failures and focus on finding a way forward.

“We expect the NDC to eat the humble pie and admit that indeed policy failures resulted in this so that perhaps we can look at the way forward.”

On Sammy Gyamfi’s description of him as an “extortionist,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said he would not pursue the matter in court.

“I will not go to court,” he said, adding that he would instead remain focused on the substantive issues and continue to pursue the accountability agenda.

Mr Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that serving as Minority Leader was an onerous responsibility that could often be lonely, but said he was prepared to remain focused on the task.

“I'm doing this for the party and the right thing will be done,” he emphasised.
