The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) has called for full accountability following the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old student with autism at Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS).

The group commended the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Upper East Regional Police Command for their response to the incident.

The police have arrested two suspects, 38-year-old Elvis Adongo and 72-year-old Adams Nyaaba Iddrisu, while the GES has interdicted two school watchmen linked to the case.

The Ministry of Education has also directed investigations and provided medical and psychosocial support for the victim, while ordering the restoration of her boarding status.

However, the NCPTAs says the measures must go beyond immediate responses and result in justice and reforms to strengthen child protection in schools.

It is demanding the nationwide vetting and auditing of school security personnel, including background checks, age and fitness assessments.

The group also wants mandatory child protection training for school staff, with specific attention to students with special educational needs.

The NCPTAs has further urged the Attorney-General, prosecutors and the Judiciary to ensure the suspects are diligently prosecuted under Ghana’s laws.

It says the case must not be allowed to fade away, stressing that the victim deserves protection, dignity and justice.

The group has also urged PTAs across the country to work with schools and the GES to strengthen safeguarding measures and ensure safer learning environments for all students.
