Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that he held a meeting with NPP flagbearer and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at his private residence in Accra ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting.

Mr Afenyo-Markin shared details of the meeting on Facebook, alongside photographs of himself and Dr Bawumia.

He said the discussions centred on party matters and the issues before the Minority as Parliament reconvenes following the Speaker’s recall.

“I held a meeting this morning with the Flag-Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at his private residence in Accra.

We discussed party matters and the agenda before the Minority as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting called by the Speaker.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia expressed confidence in his leadership of the Minority and urged him to maintain focus on the reported $1.7 billion loss linked to the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority. He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report. He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it.”

According to the Minority Leader, Dr Bawumia also urged the Minority to use parliamentary procedures to pursue accountability over the reported loss.

“He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss. He commended the Minority for its efforts so far.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he assured Dr Bawumia that the Minority would continue pursuing the matter.

“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people.”

He added that the reported loss would remain a key issue for the Minority as Parliament resumed.

“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin ended by reaffirming the Minority’s commitment to seeking answers over the matter.

“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve.”
