Agriculture Minister outlines Feed Ghana Programme, announces plans for urban farmers’ markets
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Eric Opoku, has outlined a series of initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural production and improving incomes for farmers, with particular focus on the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme.
The Minister made this known when he appeared before Parliament to respond to questions concerning the activities and priorities of his Ministry.
Dr. Opoku said the Feed Ghana Programme is designed to increase food production, strengthen value chains and enhance food security across the country, while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers.
As part of measures to address rising food prices, the Minister also announced plans by the government to establish dedicated Farmers’ Markets in urban centres to allow producers to sell directly to consumers.
According to him, the initiative is intended to eliminate middlemen, reduce post-harvest losses and bring down the cost of food items for households.
He explained that creating direct market access for farmers would not only ensure fair prices for producers but also make food more affordable for consumers.
Dr. Opoku reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing policies and programmes that support farmers, strengthen the agricultural sector and contribute to national economic growth.
