Jerry Ahmed Shaib urges depoliticisation of cancer treatment
The Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the Majority in Parliament to depoliticise the treatment of cancer and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), stressing the need to prioritise public awareness, prevention, and patient care over partisan considerations.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Mr. Shaib expressed concern over what he described as the politicisation of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.
He cautioned that healthcare interventions, particularly those addressing life-threatening conditions such as cancer, should remain above political contestation.
According to him, the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases requires a unified national approach, rather than partisan framing.
The Weija -Gbawe MP reminded lawmakers that several critical healthcare facilities and funding mechanisms supporting cancer treatment were established under initiatives introduced by a previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Mr. Shaib emphasised that cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment should be treated as a national priority, noting that politicising such interventions risks undermining public trust and weakening the collective response to the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases in the country.
