The founding Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) Samuel Obeng has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the return of about GH¢70,000 by Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei.

This follows a memo circulating on social media from her office to the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, in which she expressed her decision to return the amount allocated to her by the Majority Chief Whip.

Patricia Appiagyei said she declined the money because she did not want to personally benefit from the vetting of members of the governing side’s leadership.

The development has raised concerns about the source of the money and the conditions under which it was given. In a memorandum dated September 2, 2026, the Deputy Minority Leader explained that the money had been presented to her as an advance from the Majority Chief Whip, but she had no knowledge of its original source.

She stressed that her principal concern was that she could not accept money whose source was unclear.

Speaking to Class News, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Network Africa, Sammy Obeng, said the investigations and anti-corruption departments in Parliament must take up the case to provide answers. 

''It’s a matter that needs to be taken seriously, whether it's true or not, whether the memo emanated from their office or not. I believe that this is the exact reason why Parliament has in recent years set up the Investigations Department and then the Anti-Corruption Department of Parliament. And I think those two departments must be swiftly into conducting thorough investigation on the matter and presenting the advice,as their departmental charters require of them, so that we can get to the bottom of this.'' he said
