The Architectural Society of Ghana (ASG) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a progressively inclusive and accountable architectural profession that contributes meaningfully to national development.

Speaking at the Architecture and Built Environment Conference (ABEC) 2026 on the theme “Designing Ghana's Future”, Charles Amissah-Koomson, the Acting President of ASG, said the ASG was established out of a conviction that architecture and the environment built must play a more central role in shaping Ghana's development.

"The formation of the Society represents a renewed commitment to strengthening the architectural profession, promoting collaboration across the built environment, advancing professional knowledge and contributing to the national conversation on how Ghana is planned, designed and built," he said.

Mr. Amissah-Koomson further noted that although Ghana is urbanizing rapidly, cities and communities continue to grapple with challenges related to housing, infrastructure, flooding, development control, construction quality, sustainability and the preservation of built heritage and to him, these challenges cannot be addressed by a single profession or institution.

Rather, he stressed, it requires strong collaboration between professionals, government, industry, academia and the communities they serve.

He described ABEC as an important platform to move beyond identifying problems to focusing on practical solutions, partnerships and measurable actions.

"For the Architectural Society, this distinction is important. We do not want this conference to end when the last speaker leaves the stage. We want the ideas, commitments and recommendations from this discussion to continue beyond the conference," he stressed.

He added that members of this society are actively committed to participating in a follow-up process and working with relevant institutions and stakeholders to advance the initiatives and partnerships that emerged from the conference.

"Our mission is simple, to turn conversation into action and action into lasting impact," he said.

Mr. Amissah-Koomson urged all participants to engage openly, challenge assumptions, share knowledge and commit to doing things differently.

"Because the future of Ghana's built environment will not be shaped by conversation alone. It will be shaped by what we choose to do with the conversation."

"Welcome to ABEC. Let us design the future. Let us build it together,” he concluded.
