Ashanti Democrats petition CID to investigate alleged illegal mining in Ahafo Ano South East
A political and social group, the Ashanti Democrats, has petitioned the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to conduct what it describes as a thorough and independent investigation into allegations of illegal mining in the Ahafo Ano South East District.
In a petition dated July 15, 2026, the group said the investigation was necessary to establish the facts surrounding recent public allegations of illegal mining in the district, citing concerns over environmental degradation, public confidence and the rule of law.
Led by its President, Jerry James Sukah, the group also asked the CID to invite vlogger Amaru Shakur, who published the allegations, to assist with investigations.
According to the petition, Shakur should be asked to provide any evidence or information in his possession relating to the alleged illegal mining activities.
The Ashanti Democrats further noted that the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Mohammed Yakubu, and the District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Yamba-Nelson, have both publicly denied any involvement in the alleged illegal mining operations.
The group said the public denials by the MP and the DCE make it necessary for the CID to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to ensure justice, fairness and transparency.
Speaking to the media after presenting the petition, Mr Sukah expressed confidence that the CID would treat the matter with urgency and professionalism and take the necessary steps to establish the facts in accordance with the law.
