Attorney- General reject claims of free speech suppression
The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, has dismissed claims by the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) that recent law enforcement actions amount to a crackdown on free speech in the country.
According to Dr. Ayine, concerns about the suppression of free expression are exaggerated, insisting that while freedom of speech is guaranteed under Ghana’s Constitution, it is not absolute and remains subject to constitutional limitations.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), following public debate surrounding the detention and investigation of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe.
Abronye DC is currently under investigation over allegations including offensive conduct and the publication of statements considered likely to cause fear and panic.
Dr. Ayine maintained that the law must apply equally to all citizens and stressed that constitutional rights must be exercised responsibly and within the framework of the law.
