A man has been found dead after being swept into a flooded drainage channel at Kpando-Gabi in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region following torrential rains.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said personnel from its Kpando Fire Station responded to an emergency call on Friday, July 3, 2026, reporting that a man had fallen into an overflowing drain near the Kpando-Gabi M/A Junior High School.

According to the Service, persistent rainfall caused the drainage system to overflow, leaving parts of the community submerged and creating hazardous conditions.

Firefighters launched an intensive search and recovery operation, during which they retrieved the body of the victim from the floodwaters.

The deceased was later handed over to the Ghana Police Service to support investigations and other required procedures.

In the aftermath of the incident, the GNFS has appealed to residents to remain vigilant during heavy rains and to avoid crossing flooded drains, streams, or rivers.

The Service warned that fast-moving floodwaters can be deceptive and extremely dangerous, urging the public to prioritise safety and heed weather-related warnings to prevent avoidable tragedies.
