News
Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu,

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that government is in the process of releasing GH¢41 million to cover book and research allowances owed to members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) for the 2023/2024 academic year,

The Minister made the disclosure during the 14th Congregation and 96th anniversary ceremony of St John Bosco’s College of Education in Navrongo in the Upper East Region.

CETAG has been on an indefinite strike since November 24, 2025, pressing for the full enforcement of an arbitral award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) in May 2023.

According to Mr Iddrisu, arrangements for the payment have reached an advanced stage, with the Ministry of Finance finalising the release of the funds. He explained that the amount is currently being processed through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department for onward transfer to beneficiaries.

The Education Minister assured lecturers that the allowances would be paid without delay, expressing optimism that disbursements would be completed within the coming days.

He called on CETAG leadership to suspend the ongoing strike to allow teaching and learning to resume across the country’s colleges of education, stating that government expects normal academic activities to restart by February 9, 2026.

Mr Iddrisu appealed to the striking tutors to consider the disruption the industrial action has caused students, stressing the need for a calm and supportive academic atmosphere.

He further noted that government has shown commitment by settling outstanding book and research allowance arrears from previous years and encouraged continued dialogue to address any remaining concerns.

Reaffirming government’s willingness to engage, the Minister said sustained cooperation and timely fulfilment of obligations to education workers remain central to ensuring stability within the sector.
