Current rains good for farming as government expands irrigation projects – Agriculture Minister
Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku says the current rainfall pattern is favourable for farming, while assuring that the government is investing in irrigation infrastructure to reduce agriculture's dependence on rainfall.
Speaking to the media, Mr Opoku said moderate rainfall benefits agricultural production, although excessive rains can be damaging.
"So far, what we have seen, we think that it is good for agriculture," he said.
The minister disclosed that the government is undertaking irrigation projects across the country to ensure year-round farming and strengthen agricultural productivity.
"In the coming months, we will take some of you to the field to see what we are doing in the area of irrigation. For you to appreciate the transformation that we are bringing to Ghana's agriculture," he said.
Mr Opoku said the irrigation investments form part of government's efforts to build a more resilient agricultural sector that is less reliant on rainfall and better positioned to support food production.
