The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, has announced that investor-backed eco-lodges will begin operations next month at four of Ghana’s major tourist attractions.

The facilities will be established at Kakum National Park, Wli Falls, Boti Falls and Shai Hills Resource Reserve.

According to her, the initiative is intended to encourage tourists to spend more time at the attractions rather than making short day trips from Accra.

Speaking on Oman Ghana Nkosuo morning show on Accra-based CTV with host Obaa Yaa Titi, Ms Houadjeto explained that many international visitors prefer immersive nature experiences.

“Whites like tents and they like to observe nature, but tents aren’t safe here,” she said, noting that the eco-lodges will provide safer and more comfortable alternatives within the reserves.

She added that the lodges will offer nature-based accommodation as well as conference and wellness facilities designed for retreats and relaxation.

Ms Houadjeto said the development forms part of a broader strategy by the Ghana Tourism Authority to add value to the country’s major tourism sites by expanding visitor experiences beyond day excursions.

She noted that investors are already supporting the project and expressed optimism that the eco-lodges will help attract longer tourist stays while also creating opportunities for small conferences and retreats within the parks.
