Education Minister sets up committee to probe rising hostel fees in tertiary institutions

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a committee to examine increasing concerns over high hostel accommodation charges in tertiary institutions across the country.

The decision follows mounting complaints from students who say the escalating cost of accommodation, coupled with inadequate hostel spaces, is making campus living increasingly unaffordable.

Many students have also raised concerns about the struggle to secure suitable housing, describing the situation as a growing financial burden on both students and their families.

Mr Iddrisu announced the formation of the committee during the inauguration of the governing councils of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences.

He assured students and other stakeholders that government remains committed to ensuring affordable and accessible accommodation within tertiary institutions.

According to the Education Minister, the committee will consult university management, private hostel operators, student representatives and relevant regulatory bodies to assess the situation and recommend measures to address the challenges.

He stressed that the government would not allow market-driven interests alone to determine accommodation pricing in public education institutions.

Mr Iddrisu indicated that social considerations and the welfare of students would remain central to government policy on tertiary education and student housing.

The move comes amid increasing calls from students and the public for tighter regulation of hostel charges and greater investment in on-campus residential infrastructure to ease pressure on accommodation nationwide.
