The Minority in Parliament has urged the Majority Caucus to ensure that all outstanding businesses listed for the House’s five-day emergency sitting is brought before MPs for consideration.

The call follows Tuesday’s sitting which ended without Parliament taking up some of the key legislative matters that had necessitated the emergency recall.

The Minority expressed concern that the limited period allocated for the recall could be wasted if the various bills and other parliamentary businesses are not adequately prepared for consideration.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, August 25, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh questioned the decision to adjourn after what he considered a relatively short period of proceedings.

He called on the Majority to take immediate steps to ensure that all items on the emergency agenda are ready for debate, stressing the need for Parliament to make the most of the five-day recall.

The Minority maintains that every business scheduled for the emergency sitting must receive the attention of the House to ensure that the exercise achieves its intended purpose.

“You are calling that we should adjourn but we have done just two hours and you want us to go home? There are very good reasons why we were recalled, and one of the businesses that was advertised is the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Amendment.

“We don’t want to come here tomorrow and be told that it is not ready. The NPA bill is not ready, and the Specialised Deposits Amendment Bill is not ready. Tomorrow, don’t come and tell us that it is not ready.”
