Energy Ministry demands retraction from Multimedia over “misleading” power supply report
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has issued a formal protest to Multimedia Group, demanding an immediate correction and retraction of what it describes as a misleading publication on Ghana’s power supply aired on Joy TV.
In a letter dated April 29, 2026, and signed by the sector Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ministry strongly refuted claims made in a research report suggesting that Ghana experienced load shedding of up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) in March 2026.
According to the Ministry, the assertion is “entirely false” and unsupported by any operational data.
“At no point during the stated period did the system experience load shedding at that magnitude, or at all, as implied,” the statement emphasized.
The Ministry said the publication and subsequent discussions across Multimedia platforms presented an inaccurate picture of Ghana’s power sector, warning that such claims risk undermining public confidence and spreading misinformation.
It stressed that throughout March and April 2026, electricity generation was sufficient to meet domestic demand, with excess capacity even exported to neighbouring countries under regional power agreements.
Officials further argued that the report failed to properly interpret technical aspects of power system management, including plant dispatch and routine grid adjustments, which they say were misrepresented as supply deficits.
The Ministry also criticised the lack of engagement prior to the publication, noting that neither the Ministry nor relevant sector agencies were consulted.
It described this as a breach of established protocols in reporting on critical national infrastructure and a failure to uphold standards of responsible journalism.
As part of its response, the Ministry is demanding:
* An immediate retraction and correction of the report with equal prominence
* A formal public clarification on the true state of power supply
* A commitment from Multimedia to consult relevant authorities on technical issues before publication
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and indicated its readiness to provide accurate data and technical briefings to support informed public discourse.
